starting a mom blog

When you first start your blog, there’s a 1000% chance you will make SO many mistakes – I started my blogging journey at the end of 2022 with a completely different domain—Crunchy Granola Mama. Let’s just say it wasn’t the brand I wanted long-term!

It’s really become a passion project, something where I’ve changed over time a thousand times. It’s been a frustrating and interesting process with the lessons learned and mistakes made along the way.

I had no idea where to start with branding.

If you’re searching for blog name ideas for a mom or trying to figure out how to shape your brand, I’m here to guide you!

Advantages and Disadvantages of Blogging

There are many advantages and disadvantages of blogging, the advantage of blogging far outweigh the disadvantages.

It is so important to take the time to write out your own list of advantages and disadvantages based on your personal goals.

Ask yourself: What do you expect in the long term from your blog? Is it to create more resources for learning a skill, such as creating a course? Or is your goal to share your experiences with others for fun?

Clarifying these expectations will help you stay focused and motivated as you go through the ups and downs of blogging.

Identify Your Reason

How do you envision your blog impacting others or your life?

For me, the advantage of blogging is the time freedom it offers in the long term, sharing delish recipes with goals of publishing our cookbook, sharing our favorite products, hiking adventures and creating passive income while sharing how starting a mom blog has changed my life.

Realizing that I didn’t have to pursue the traditional 9-5 grind and could create a flexible work schedule was the icing on the cake for me.

When I first started my blog, making money wasn’t my main focus—I was simply doing it for fun.

My advice, especially as an entrepreneurship mom, is to start your blog as a fun hobby.

There’s a steep learning curve, and you’ll need to be patient and persistent.

Building something meaningful takes time and grit. Focusing on enjoying the process makes the journey more rewarding.

My blog has truly become a labor of love. I refine my skills often, setting goals, keeping track of analytics and always seeking ways to improve.

I’ll be sharing the tools that have helped me focus on what I love—sharing my story and connecting with others while building a business and keeping organized.

Chapter 1: Selecting A Niche

how niche is too niche

Selecting a niche begins with identifying your passions, skills, and the problems you can solve for your target audience.

Think about what excites you and aligns with your expertise. Research your potential audience to find areas with demand but less competition—this is where the benefit of niche marketing shines.

Here are some popular niche ideas to inspire your blogging or content creation:

  • Health and Wellness: Supplements, fitness programs, home gym equipment.
  • Parenting and Family: Baby gear, toddler toys, educational resources.
  • Personal Finance: Budgeting tools, credit repair services, investing apps.
  • Tech and Gadgets: Smart home devices, laptops, software subscriptions. (Explaining how to do certain things in wordpress/blog)
  • Food and Cooking: Specialty ingredients, cookware, meal prep kits.
  • Travel: Luggage, travel insurance, booking platforms, travel gear.
  • Beauty and Skincare: Organic skincare, beauty tools, makeup brands.
  • Home Decor and DIY: Furniture, organization products, DIY tools.
  • Sustainable Living: Eco-friendly products, reusable items, green energy solutions.
  • Outdoor and Adventure: Camping gear, hiking equipment, outdoor apparel.
  • Education and Learning: Online courses, eBooks, language learning apps.
  • Pet Care: Pet food, grooming supplies, pet training tools.
  • Fashion: Affordable clothing, sustainable fashion, accessories.
  • Mental Health and Self-Care: Journals, therapy apps, mindfulness tools.
  • Gaming: Consoles, games, gaming accessories.

Niching down is difficult but required

Starting out, I knew I wanted to share recipes, but I also dreamed of writing about hiking, blogging tips, my photography, some toddler activities, our favorite products, and our van build.

Basically, I was heading toward a full-on lifestyle brand.

However, starting a mom blog, you really need to niche down to find your audience.

How niche is too niche

By narrowing your focus, you can connect more deeply with your audience, establish authority, and stand out in a crowded market. A well-defined niche helps attract loyal followers and creates opportunities for growth, making your content or product more impactful and profitable.

Consider your audience size and the potential for year-round engagement.

If your niche is seasonal, it could limit your monetization options due to a lack of consistent content ideas. To find balance, avoid being overly specific.

An example would be instead of toddler Christmas activities you can market for toddler activities and change this idea to a rewards system instead of having a seasonal pin.

Aesthetic blogging is like a puzzle—each piece fits perfectly in time.

I started blogging to make that a reality, and now I’m so excited to share how moms make money blogging and turn their passions into something bigger.

Define your audience

Who are you writing for? Stay-at-home moms, entrepreneurs, foodies, travelers?

I wanted to share it all—recipes, toddler learning activities, products, local hikes, and blogging tips. But I quickly learned that niching down is the key to growing a loyal audience faster.

I wanted my work at home mom blog to truly work for me—a business I could create, nurture, and make successful on my own terms.

By focusing on building a blog that aligned with my passions and exploring creative passive income ideas for moms, I turned my vision into a reality that supports my lifestyle and goals.

Some May Ask, Is Blogging Dead?

Blogging is far from dead! In fact, it’s evolving, and there’s never been a better time for starting a mom blog or diving into amateur blogging. While the blogging world may feel saturated, there’s always room for unique voices and fresh perspectives.

After some time, you realize you run into a lot of repeat information, I knew it was time to invest in myself by investing in education.

Burn out is real and as the saying goes, “if you’re not growing, you’re standing still.”

inspirational quotes for bloggers

There’s nothing worse than standing still and always wondering, ‘What if?’ What if I hadn’t taken the leap and started this blogging business? I’d still be dreaming about the possibilities instead of living them.

Discovering mom blogs that make money and learning from work at home blogs for moms inspired me to take action—and now, I get to share how this journey can transform your life, too.

Chapter 2: Tech Matters

how to set up a self hosted blog

One of the biggest questions I get when people ask me how to start a mom blog is: “What do I need to actually set it up?” Don’t worry—tech stuff doesn’t have to be scary. Once you get the right tools in place, everything else falls into place. Let me break it down for you!

First Things First: Hosting Your Blog with BigScoots

Before anything else, you need a web host—think of it as the home where your blog lives. I personally use and love BigScoots. They’ve been amazing from the very beginning. Here’s why I recommend them:
✔️ Super fast site speeds (because no one likes waiting for pages to load)
✔️ Top-notch customer service—like, actually helpful humans
✔️ Automatic daily backups so your content stays safe
✔️ Optimized for WordPress (more on that below 👇)
For moms juggling kids, life, and all the things, having a reliable, stress-free host makes a HUGE difference. I’ve tried cheaper ones before and trust me… this is worth it.

Why WordPress is the Best Platform for Mom Bloggers

Once you’ve got your hosting, you’ll need a platform to build your site. I highly recommend using WordPress.ORG. It’s what I use for this blog, and here’s why it’s perfect for beginners and seasoned bloggers alike:
🛠 User-Friendly – You don’t need to be tech-savvy or know how to code.
🎨 Customizable – So many themes and plugins to match your personal style.
📈 SEO-Ready – Helps your blog show up on Google so more people can find you.
📱 Mobile-Friendly – Looks great on phones and tablets (because let’s be honest, we’re all multitasking on the go).
When you pair WordPress with a strong host like BigScoots, you’re setting yourself up for success from day one.

Chapter 3: Content

lifestyle blog content ideas

If you’re feeling stuck on what to post next, this roundup of lifestyle blog content ideas is the perfect place to start. From everyday routines and wellness tips to home decor inspiration and travel hacks, there’s no shortage of fresh topics to keep your audience coming back. The key to a successful lifestyle blog is variety, so don’t be afraid to explore different angles as you build out your lifestyle blog content calendar.

Creating engaging content for lifestyle blog posts doesn’t have to be time-consuming. If you prefer writing your own pieces or using pre written blog content to save time, it’s important to make sure everything you share reflects your voice and resonates with your audience. You can always mix in curated ideas with original blog content to maintain authenticity while streamlining your workflow.

Consistency is essential when building an audience, so planning your lifestyle blog content ahead of time is a smart move. If you’re looking to stay on track without burning out, consider using a content template or batching your writing. Whether you’re sharing DIY projects, mom-life insights, or wellness routines, combining original blog content with time-saving tools will help you create a sustainable flow that keeps readers engaged.

Chapter 4: Keywords

short tail keywords vs long tail keywords

Keywords – The only way search engines will find you. Seriously.
It took me 1.5 years (and a paid course) to finally understand this, and let me tell you, I had to rewrite every blog post. Before I figured it out, the only person reading my posts was my mom.

If you want your content to show up on Google, you need to do your research. Search short tail vs long tail keywords. Short-tail keywords, like “blogging tips,” which get tons of searches but come with a lot of competition. On the other hand, long-tail keywords, like “how to start a blog and make money with affiliate marketing,” have lower search volume but are far easier to rank for – which is what you want to aim for.

The best tool for finding the right keywords is hands down, Keysearch. It has a free version will get started on your keyword research and easily optimize your content.

Then create a google sheets doc with all of your keywords, makes notes as to difficulty score, search volume, linking and most asked questions.

Next, install the plugin RankMath SEO

Add your keywords in the right spots across your site—titles, headings, image alt text, meta descriptions, and URLs. RankMath helps you by walking you through basic SEO practices and outlines you by scoring exactly you need to improve on.

When adding in the correct keywords, it greatly improves how search engines find and rank your content
